The Importance Of Setting Goals With Your Partner

September 18, 20236 min read

I am a big fan of goal setting. All the motivational videos and books I've read, champion the notion that setting goals propels your vision, motivation and dedication to achieving your goals. They say that people with goals succeed because they know where they are going, and that couldn’t ring more true for many. Not only is it good to set goals, but through setting these goals, we are able to plan small steps in order for us to reach them.

Setting personal goals is vital for your self development, but setting goals with your partner is important because it can help you both to align your priorities, make decisions together, and work towards a shared future. Here are some reasons why setting goals with your spouse is so valuable:

A strong relationship doesn't just happen overnight, it takes work, patience and a lot of commitment. While there are many aspects that contribute to a successful relationship, setting goals with your partner is a crucial one. When you set goals together, it strengthens your bond by working together towards a shared vision. It requires open and honest communication, which can help build intimacy and trust between partners.. Not only does it give you something to aspire towards, it also keeps you accountable to achieve those goals. Moreover, it can help both of you to continuously develop and improve your relationship, yourself and each other.

In this post, I will be discussing the incredible benefits of setting goals with your partner and 5 activities that you can do together to help you set and achieve those goals.

When you set goals with your partner, it helps in building teamwork and mutual understanding. It gives you the opportunity to work together as a team to achieve a shared aim. This can range from something as small as planning a weekend getaway to something as significant as making a big purchase. By setting goals together, it helps in developing a strong sense of teamwork, partnership, and collaboration. Teamwork is not just for work projects, it should also be a standard for your relationship. How does your relationship work if you don’t work together? Like the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”. Set the tone for your relationship and your future by learning the best ways to work together.

Setting goals with your partner means not just working on the relationship but also working on yourselves. By dedicating time and effort towards personal growth, you'll both be able to support each other and propel each other forward. This can range from learning new skill sets, setting a fitness resolution or even setting a financial target. It's an excellent way to take charge of your personal development as well as your relationship's growth. We’re in the era where self/personal development is a requisite for achieving self satisfaction as well as your goals. The internet provides a wealth of knowledge which is available for all to learn a new skill, meditate, read or listen to books, the list is endless. We have taken personal development out of the corporate offices and into our own lives, for the sake of progression and continuing the journey of becoming who we are destined to be, not just career wise by character wise too. So it’s perfect if you can also set personal development goals with your partner and help one another along the way.

The biggest benefit of setting goals with your partner is that it helps to strive for success and overcome any hurdles that come along the way. It's a great way to stay motivated and focused. You'll be able to identify what success means to both of you, and together work towards achieving it. It's a great way to enrich your life and fulfil your dreams together. Sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated when you are trying to reach personal goals, especially when you may encounter setbacks. So it’s an amazing thing to do with your partner, not only can you keep each other accountable but you’re able to push and help each other, and use each other to fall back on for inspiration and encouragement when you need it. You’re also able to share the load with shared goals, whether that's financially, saving for a deposit for a house, or for emotional support, for example family planning.

Setting goals with your partner sparks a conversation that leads to a better understanding of each other's needs and wants. It can be easy to fall into a comfortable routine that lacks communication, but setting goals allows you to open up about your thoughts and feelings, discuss your aspirations, and talk about the different ways to achieve them. Delving into your hopes and dreams may bring you both closer as you open up parts of you that you may not have shared before. How amazing would it be to open up your relationship to an even deeper level and to be each other’s cheerleaders? No one should want more for you than your partner, and you for them.

As life moves on and responsibilities pile up, it's easy to forget what brought you together in the first place. Setting goals helps in bringing that excitement back to your relationship. It gives you something to look forward to, creates a shared energy and a sense of purpose - ultimately reigniting the spark in your relationship. Goals don’t always have to always be massive or life changing, a fun goal could be going away on holiday with your partner to rekindle the romance and have some grown up time for a little while. Or dedicated date nights, where you know you have something to look forward to on a regular basis, where you can try out new restaurants or pick up a hobby to do together.

5 Activities that will help you set goals and achieve them:

  • Make a Vision Board together, filled with pictures that represent your shared dreams and goals.

  • Plan a "Date Night" to discuss shared aspirations, big and small, and the steps that need to be taken to achieve them.

  • Create individual goals, then come together and discuss how you can support each other in achieving them.

  • Read a book or listen to a podcast on personal development, discuss the content, and take action on what is learned.

  • Set timelines and break down your shared goals into smaller steps to make them more manageable. Celebrate and reward yourselves as you accomplish each step.

Setting goals with your partner is an excellent way to work towards personal development, strengthen your relationship, and stay motivated. With each other's support and encouragement, you'll be able to accomplish much more than you would on your own. Whether big or small, every goal you achieve together will bring you closer and strengthen your relationship. Take a moment to set some goals together today and start building towards a better tomorrow.
